January 25th, 2012Barack Obama Challenges Congress and Calls Out China
US President Barack Obama touched on a number of hot topics Tuesday night in his State of the Union speech. Wall Street reform, health care and education were just a few of the issues he discussed. But he started off by issuing a special challenge to Congress on tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Obama also talked tough when discussing China. He called the Asian giant out for unfair trade practices, and demanded that stricter guidelines be imposed to protect American consumers from unsafe goods.
State of the Union Rebuttal
Shortly after the President’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, Indiana governor Mitch Daniels took to the airwaves to deliver the official GOP response. Daniels slammed the President’s economic track record, and called for an end to the administration’s mindless spending. He also demanded a simpler tax system, and accused the White House of trying to divide the nation by framing Republicans as obstacles rather than equals.
Apple Sets Records Again
In tech news, Apple has had yet another record-breaking quarter! The company had sales in excess of 46 BILLION dollars in the last financial quarter. They sold a record 37 million iPhones and 15.4 million iPads in the final three months of 2011. All told, the company made 13.1 billion. Apple’s quarterly profits blew away even the most optimistic of forecasts from Wall Street analysts, and are an all-time high in the tech industry.
SEAL Team Strikes Again
The US Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden has struck again! The SEALS freed a pair of foreign aid workers held captive in north-central Somalia in a dramatic overnight rescue. The two hostages – a Danish man and an American woman – were abducted by armed gunmen three months ago and held in a secret compound. According to local authorities, the SEALs arrived at the location by parachute and took down eight or nine of the captors in short order.
Egypt Marches
Thousands of residents marched through the streets of Egypt to mark the first anniversary of Hosni Mubarak’s ousting from power. They congregated in Tahrir Square, the centre of the revolt that brought down the now-former president’s 30-year reign. Although there were celebrations, many in attendance tempered their emotions, choosing to protest the country’s current military council.
Demi Moore in Treatment
Actress Demi Moore has checked into a treatment facility after paramedics were called to her home. Her spokesperson says that due to the recent stresses in her life she has quote, “chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion”. But other sources say that she is getting help for substance abuse.
