January 24th, 2012Mitt Romney and Gingrich Attack Each Other Again
Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich clashed once again at the latest Republican debate in Tampa Florida. After suffering a setback in the polls in South Carolina, Romney changed tactics and took to attacking the surging Gingrich. Romney accused him of being an influence peddler with a spotty track record in Washington. For his part, Gingrich angrily denied the accusations, and early poll results give him a 9 percent lead in the sunshine state.
Romney Releases Tax Records
Amidst immense public pressure, Mitt Romney has finally released his 2010 tax documents. They show that he paid about 3 million dollars in federal taxes last year and gave 3 million to charity. Romney says the modest 14 percent tax rate he paid in 2010 will rise slightly on his 2011 statement. However, his rate pales in comparison to that of Newt Gingrich, who paid 31 percent last year.
Russia Backs Syria
New reports say Russia has signed a contract to sell combat jets to Syria. Specifically, three-dozen Yak-1-30 aircraft with an estimated value of 550 million dollars. Russia’s foreign minister has appeared defiant about the unconfirmed sale, stressing no international laws are being broken. UN representatives say over 54 hundred people have died at the hands of Syria’s government over the past 10 months.
Solar Eruption
The Earth has been hit with the strongest radiation storm in several years. That’s according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, which says a massive solar eruption on Sunday night is the culprit. Although the storm poses no health risks, it does have the potential to wreak havoc on electronic equipment, including communications satellites, navigation equipment, and even rocket launches.
Swiss Prepare For WEF
In the picturesque Swiss mountain town of Davos the rich and powerful elite from around the world are gathering for the annual World Economic Forum. They’ll be well protected too – 5000 soldiers have been deployed to protect the business and political leaders. Over 11 miles of wire fencing have been erected around the meeting site.
Oscar Nominees Announced
The nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards have been announced. Martin Scorcese’s “Hugo” led the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Director and Picture. “The Help”, “Moneyball” and the French silent film “The Artist” were all recognized with multiple nominations for acting and Best Picture nods. The Oscars will be handed out February 26th.
