Wikipedia Goes Dark to Protest SOPA
The world’s largest free encyclopedia, Wikipedia, has shut itself down to oppose the US Stop Online Piracy Act, also known as SOPA. SOPA would give the US Justice Department the power to block websites associated with piracy from appearing in search engine results. However critics say the law is vaguely written and could give the feds the authority to block all sorts of content online.

Congress Has Record Low Approval Rating
Members of congress returned to work this week in Washington, amidst historically low approval ratings! A Washington-Post ABC News poll last week put their job approval rating at just 13 percent. And a Gallup poll in December generated even lower figures! Lawmakers were welcomed back to work by hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters who had gathered outside the Capitol.

AP Opens Office in North Korea
It may sound impossible to believe, but the Associated Press now has an all-format news bureau in North Korea! Operations started there this month, and so far it’s been relatively smooth sailing. Speaking from Pyongyang, executive editor Kathleen Carroll stressed that the famed newsgathering organization will not submit to any form of censorship.

Barack Obama Heading to North Carolina to Accept Nomination
President Barack Obama has chosen a venue to accept this summer’s presidential nomination – and he’s going BIG! It’s the 74,000 seat Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. And given Obama won the state last election by a mere 14,000 votes, the location clearly wasn’t chosen haphazardly. The event will take place on September sixth, wrapping up three days of convention festivities.

Yahoo Co-Founder Resigns
Jerry Yang has resigned from Yahoo’s board of directors. Yang, who co-founded the former web giant in 1995, became CEO in 2007. His tenure was cut short after turning down a $47 billion buyout from Microsoft, a decision that rubbed shareholders the wrong way. Since then, Yahoo has fallen further behind Google in both search engine popularity and advertising revenue.

Ricky Gervais Will Not Host Golden Globes Again
Ricky Gervais says he’s done hosting the Golden Globes. In the wake of his third straight hosting gig this past weekend, the Brit funnyman says he will NOT be back for a fourth. He posted on his website that he told his agent to NEVER let him be talked into the gig again. Say it ain’t so Ricky!
