Casualty Count Rises in Cruise Ship Disaster
The casualty count has risen to at least six after a cruise ship hit a reef off the Italian coast. According to officials, as many as 16 passengers and crew remain unaccounted for. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, insists that his charts showed that he was in safe waters. Prosecutors have hit Schettino with several charges, including manslaughter and abandoning his ship,

Iran Talking Tough
Iran is talking tough with its neighbours in the Persian Gulf. Officials say there will be repercussions if their fellow OPEC countries increase oil output to compensate for the looming ban on Iranian crude. The warning comes mere weeks after President Barack Obama signed legislation making it nearly impossible for most governments to buy oil from Tehran.

Jon Huntsman Drops Out of GOP Race
One more Republican presidential candidate has dropped out. Jon Huntsman, the former ambassador to China, has officially withdrawn from the race to become the GOP nominee. Some members of his campaign staff appeared to be surprised by the news after Huntsman placed a surprising 3rd at the New Hampshire primary. He says he’ll endorse frontrunner Mitt Romney.

Space Probe Grounded
Russia’s 170 million dollar Phobos-Ground space probe crashed to Earth on Sunday, spreading debris across the southern Pacific. Launched on November 8th, the high-tech vessel was designed to explore one of Mars’s two moons. Unfortunately, technical issues forced the mission to be aborted. Officials say there’s little-to-no risk of environmental contamination, despite the fact fuel from the wreckage is considered highly toxic.

Tim Tebow Named Favorite Athlete in US
Tom Brady and the Patriots totally embarrassed the Denver Broncos on Saturday night, ending what’s been a magical season for Denver quarterback Tim Tebow. But it wasn’t all bad news for Tebow! A nationwide poll conducted by ESPN named him America’s favorite athlete! It’s especially amazing considering it came in just his second pro season!

Golden Globes Awarded
The 2012 Golden Globe Awards are in the books. Last year’s controversial host Ricky Gervais was back at the helm, but kept a friendlier tone this time around. The silent French film “The Artist” fared well, with wins as Best Picture Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy, and Best Score. Other major awards went to George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Michelle Williams.
