Syria appears to be teetering on the brink of civil war! A Syrian opposition group has joined forces with the Free Syria Army to end the reign of President Bashar al Assad. The coordinated moves come in response to a vicious recent crackdown against demonstrators by the Assad regime.
Terror Suspect Arrested in Bangkok
Authorities in Thailand have arrested a Lebanese suspect believed to have been plotting terrorist attacks in popular tourist districts of Bangkok. The suspect is thought to be a member of Hezbollah, the Lebanese political group that the American government calls a terrorist organization. US citizens in busy areas of Bangkok are being urged to exercise caution.
Obama Asks to Rraise Debt Ceiling Again
US President Barack Obama has formally asked Congress for an additional 1.2 TRILLION dollars to pay the bills! Obama says they need to borrow more in order to pay for existing spending commitments. Congress now has 15 days to vote on the increase. If it goes through, it would raise the US debt ceiling to 16.4 trillion dollars.
ICANN Offering Custom Top Level Domains
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – AKA ICANN – has opened up the web for people who want customized top-level domains. Meaning instead of having a site ending in dot-com, it could end in, say, dot-NakedNews. It’s good news for banks and other corporations who fear scam artists, but it’s expensive. 185-thousand dollars per application, on top of a myriad of other costs.
Weather Woes
In South Africa, weathermen are getting more than just slack from viewers over incorrect forecasts: they can now face jail time! The African National Congress wants to put a halt to any panic caused by false predictions of storms, droughts and flash flooding. Repeat offenders can expect fines of over a million dollars, plus 10 years in prison!
Mourning Glory
Remember all that crazy crying North Korean citizens did at Kim Jong-il’s funeral procession? Well, those who didn’t give it their ALL are now being sentenced to six months’ hard labour. That’s according to South Korean sources, which say the same punishment is being doled out to those who didn’t attend the event.
