January 12th, 2012Mississippi Pardons On Hold
A Mississippi judge has filed a temporary hold on the release of 21 of the 200-plus prisoners given pardons or clemency by outgoing governor Haley Barbour. The pardons have sparked outrage from victims’ families, who say they fear for their own safety. The State Attorney General argues that Barbour failed to file the pardon requests thirty days before they were granted, thereby rendering them unconstitutional.
New Swine Flu Scare
There are reports of 12 Americans being infected with a new, mutated strain of swine flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the strain, called H3N2v, was reportedly contracted through swine, as well as limited human-to-human contact. The CDC is quick to point out that there’s no evidence that sustained person-to-person transmission is happening.
Immigration Fraud Ring Busted
After a 2-year investigation, US authorities have arrested 50 people in a massive alleged immigration fraud ring. They claim that the accused conspired to sell the identities of thousands of Puerto Ricans to illegal immigrants. Hundreds of documents, including birth certificates, social security numbers, and driver’s licenses have been sold since 2009. The documents were sold for up to $2,500 each.
US Naval Deployment
A United States naval aircraft carrier strike group has arrived in the Arabian Sea. The vessel was deployed in reaction to Iran’s threat to block off the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions over its nuclear program escalate. A US government spokesman says the military is prepared to use force should Iran deploy any type of strategic blockade.
Iranian Oil Reduction
Japan’s finance minister says “concrete steps” will be taken to decrease oil dependency on Iran. Jun Azumi made the statement to US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at a high-level meeting in Tokyo. This is considered no small feat given Japan is the world’s second largest importer of Iranian oil.
US Owed Hundreds of Billions in Taxes
The next time you complain about your government being broke, keep this in mind. According to the IRS, they’re still owed $385 BILLION in unpaid taxes. Making it worse, that number is JUST from 2006! That’s up significantly from the amount 5 years previous. In 2001, $290 billion went unpaid.
