January 11th, 2012Cracks Found in Super Jumbo Jets
Australian engineers are calling for the grounding of all Airbus A380 models – the largest passenger aircrafts in the world. This comes after both Qantas and Singapore Airlines found cracks in the wings of the super jumbo jets. Both companies maintain that the planes are safe. However, the secretary of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association says it’s unacceptable for airlines to gamble with passenger lives, and wants all 67 A380s worldwide grounded for inspection.
Scary Drug Recall
Drug manufacturer Novartis is recalling several popular over-the-counter medicines amid fears that bottles may contain powerful painkillers instead. The pills in question include Excedrin and No-Doz expiring before December 20, 2014, and Gas-X and Bufferin expiring before December 20, 2013. It’s believed that these bottles from a troubled plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, could contain powerful opioids such as Percocet.
CES Underway in Vegas
The Consumer Electronics Show – the biggest tech show of its kind in the world – is underway in Las Vegas. And as usual, it’s a feast for tech junkies. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer kicked things off, delivering what could be the company’s last keynote address at the show. The company also announced that Kinect – their popular motion controller for the Xbox 360 – will be coming for the PC. The overall trend at the show this year is thinner, faster, and more powerful.
Nuclear Woes
New intel from the International Atomic Energy Agency has triggered a stern warning from the US to Iran. The data shows that Iran is enriching uranium at 20 percent in one of its northern facilities. The 20 percent mark is significant since it’s a key step toward developing weapons-grade nuclear material. The State Department has once again demanded Iran cease all enrichment activities and comply with UN Security Council resolutions.
Iran and Venezuela Unite
Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad kicked off his four-nation Latin American tour this week in Venezuela. The Iranian leader paid a visit to his friend and political ally Hugo Chavez. The two men wasted no time ramping up the anti-American rhetoric, stating they must stick together to stop the “pretensions of the Yankee Empire to control the globe.”

He set up a profile under the pseudonym “Damon Kidney” to find a donor with blood type O – and managed to find one. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, this is happening more and more often.
