January 31st, 2011No end in sight in Egypt
For the seventh straight day, the streets in Cairo were packed with Egyptian anti-government protesters. In a sign that could be seen as a concession of sorts, the riot police who clashed with protesters earlier were, for the most part, nowhere to be found. It’s estimated that about 50-thousand people were in the streets demanding that President Hosni Mubarak step down.
US and UK weigh in on Egypt
UK Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama have joined together to call for an “orderly transition” to a more democratic form of government. Cameron says that he’s not suggesting that Hosni Mubarak step down. But he added that the country must go down a path of reform, and not repression.
Pop star doing time for sex tape
One of South East Asia’s best-known pop stars, who goes by the stage name Ariel, has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail since sex tapes he made hit the internet last June. Ariel is the first person to be charged under new strict Indonesian laws, which found him guilty of quote – “giving an opportunity for others to spread, produce and prepare pornographic material.”
Chinese news uses fake footage
The authenticity of a news broadcast in China has come into question after movie buffs spotted similarities between the news footage and a popular Hollywood blockbuster. Chinese Central Television ran a piece on air force training that they may have pieced together using shots from the final combat sequence of Top Gun. CCTV has removed the story from its website and, so far, declined comment.
Internet billionaires invest in new project
Facebook and Youtube founders Eduardo Saverin and Jawed Karim, are among investors funding an 8 million dollar start-up called Qwiki. The site compiles data on a given topic into a detailed multimedia presentation. If all goes according to plan, Qwiki aims to quote “forever improve the way people experience information.”
Apple introducing new payment method
Apple is planning to introduce services that will allow customers to make payments with their wireless devices. The technology, developed by Near-Field Communication, will allow Apple’s service to tap into a user’s pre-loaded information, like a credit card or bank info. Both the iPad 2 and the next generation of iPhone will likely be fully equipped.
