Long before Anna Chapman and 9 other Russian sleeper agents were arrested in the US, a young woman from Latvia piqued the interest of authorities. In March, 24 year-old Anna Fermanova was stopped at JFK airport en route to Moscow with night-vision rifle scopes in her luggage. Fermanova was detained upon returning to the US. She’s now under house arrest, awaiting trial.
Russian decision to expand powers of secret police has rights activists up in arms
Russia’s FSB secret police has been extended new powers. The KGB successor has been granted the right to warn citizens against quote – “creating the conditions” for crimes. Human rights groups are outraged, fearing the FSB may now be able to act above the law.
